The half-sole covers the ball of the foot for protection during turns. The short elastic straps help the shoe hug the foot. Reader Reviews The construction is top notch, sturdy durable, comfortable. The design is slightly off however, I'm not sure who's feet these are supposed to fit, but they aren't normal. The opening for the 4 small toes is way to small to fit anyone comfortably, so you'll have to make some alterations. They are easily cut to fit in this regard, I had to trim as noted plus the instep so they had room for all 4 toes and did not pinch around the middle. The other odd thing is the sole is apparently designed for a square foot, not a tapered one, resulting in a somewhat odd fit that can not be altered.
